dragonfly

I’m back!  It’s cold outside and the leaves on the trees are turning brown.  My birthday is passed, our holiday is over, is it Christmas now…?

So first snap of the season is this dragonfly, taken outside the Imperial Palace gardens in Tokyo.  There were dragonflies everywhere we went in Japan, and they were especially numerious at the shrine complex at Nikko (where we also spotted a few wild monkeys from the bus).  It is just as well that I have now conquered my fear of these creatures, otherwise I would have been a quivering wreck on the day of our visit there.

I’ve got a few more Japanese insects to thrill you with over the coming days.  No mosquitoes… we just have the bites to remember them by.  Almost all of the butterflies were camera-shy, but I have my memories and when I get the chance I shall try and identify them.  Talking of identification, I got a couple of books on British insects and wildflowers for my birthday so I am looking forward to thumbing through them in the near future.
