The moths are back in town
Ooh, the excitement today – spotted and snapped one of the first few moths of the year on the old moth wall. I think this is a lime-speck pug moth, but I could be wrong.
Hopefully this bodes well for the coming summer. I’ve been thinking lately about putting out a moth trap in the garden [...]

The ladybird tree
Yesterday’s moth has moved – (s)he is still hanging round on the moth wall though… Today I spotted a tree which was crawling with ladybirds. I got a few snaps, but the sweet little creatures were all running around and they all seem to be shot at slightly weird angles.
I’m off to London for the [...]

More action from the moth wall
The title is slightly misleading – more inaction from the moth wall is more appropriate. This little lovey has been hanging around in the same spot all week. I wonder if (s)he has passed over to the other side. Not the most exciting beastie in the world to look at, but it [...]

What big eyes you have
One from the archives today. Well, it feels like a long time ago since we were in Japan, although in truth it has only been a month or so since we returned. This is one of the many, many dragonflies that we saw on our visit, posing for the camera at Nikko.
Today’s eye [...]

Year of the Moth
The leaves are officially falling from the trees…. I saw it with my own eyes when we took a stroll in the wet Devonshire countryside this morning. For me this year has been the year of the moth – the year when I stopped seeing them as something to dodge in an Italian toilet (putting [...]

A friend from the garden
I think this garden spider has either been eaten or chased away by the house spider who has a house next door.
I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling a bit blue about the news that this current spell of sunny weather is ‘the last gasp of summer’. Outside earlier there were a group [...]

Happy hopper
Do grasshoppers have emotions? This one was heading up a wall at work yesterday. I was certainly happy, snapping away in the lunchtime sunshine. I’m not too sure what kind of grasshopper it is, but this is just another one of the creatures that I used to be scared of which I [...]

Ghostly beastie
Is summer over now? I’m wearing knee-high socks under my jeans in an attempt to keep some heat about me. It was raining most of the weekend, and it didn’t stop till this evening. Because I’m a fair weather photographer, I therefore have no new shots of the weird and colourful world around me. [...]

Black Arches moth
Spotted on one of the walls outside work today, a black arches moth. Another beauty. And also, smaller but no less interesting, this little chap:
I’ve no idea what this one is. It was a great deal smaller than the black arches, and it took me long enough to identify that one (even with its distinguished [...]

More creepy crawlies
Especially for my mum who loves creepy crawlies… erm, not! Sorry mum! On the left a lovely forest bug, whose path we crossed on Sunday on the Grand Western canal. And on the right a teeny tiny snail spotted sliming its way up the wall at work.
Also spotted today: black nightshade. [...]
